British Library release a million images

A million first steps

We have released over a million images onto Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images were taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books digitised by Microsoft who then generously gifted the scanned images to us, allowing us to release them back into the Public Domain.

The images themselves are available at the link below:

Art in other institutions

Many institutions other than galleries and museums use art as a way to engage with the public. The Science Museum and The Freud Museum, both in London are examples of such institutions. Art is about the world we live in and the world in us: don't limit where you look for inspiration.

Tom Keating On Painters - E01 - Turner

Tom Keating was a famous forger and art restorer. This is one of a series of programmes that were made in 1986/87 and released on VHS, but unfortunately not on DVD. It is wonderful to see someone so comfortable with their technique and so knowledgeable about the materials they are working with.

Free technical guides for artists

Both Winsor&Newton and Reeves have free downloadable pdf guides to various materials and techniques. These are available at the links below. Obviously these heavily emphasize their products but the information is still useful and can be applied to other brands.

http://www.reeves-art.com/guides-and-tips

This is a guide to historical painting techniques, materials and studio practice from The Getty Conservation Institute, http://www.getty.edu/conservation/index.html.  Although the guide is done through the prism of conservation, that requires a considerable understanding of the original process involved, which is well explained. They have many other documents available.
